In a recent interview with Cardigan Radio,  Kevin O’Connell passionately called for an independent investigation into child abuse on Caldey Island near Tenby, Wales. Kevin emphasised the critical need for an Independent public inquiry to uncover the truth and hold perpetrators accountable, highlighting what he describes as historical and ongoing failures in safeguarding on the island.

Kevin, who has personal experiences of childhood abuse, shared harrowing stories of the abuse suffered by children at the hands of Catholic priests. He pointed out that the Catholic Church has historically been responsible for safeguarding on the island, yet has repeatedly failed to protect the most vulnerable. This failure, he said, has allowed abuse to be covered up by authorities and religious leaders for decades.

Kevin stressed that these issues are not confined to the past. He spoke about his ongoing campaign, the ‘Caldey Island Survivors Campaign,’ The campaign aims to bring justice to survivors and ensure that such atrocities are never repeated.

Kevin also recounted the personal impact of this abuse, discussing the trauma and nightmares that continue to haunt him. His sister was one of the victims, and Kevin has become a determined advocate for justice, giving a voice to those who have suffered in silence.

A significant point raised during the interview was the lack of accountability and action from the authorities. Kevin called for a permanent police presence on Caldey Island and a single point of contact for authorities off the island to improve safeguarding measures. He also highlighted the urgent need for an independent body to implement oversight and reforms to prevent further abuse.

Kevin urged survivors to come forward.

The stories shared by Kevin and other survivors underscore the dire need for a comprehensive, independent inquiry. Cardigan Radio stands with Kevin O’Connell and the survivors of Caldey Island in calling for immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of all children and to hold those responsible for these heinous acts accountable.
